Q1: What model Allison transmission is in my vehicle?

Answer: Check the Nameplate on the R/H side of the transmission for On-Hwy,
and on the Rear Cover for Off-Hwy transmissions. Check your vehicle/order paperwork. If you cannot find the Model Number or Serial Number please call us, but have the following information ready: Type of vehicle, HP of your engine, Age of the vehicle.

Q2: What fluid do I use in my Allison transmission?

Answer: TranSynd, fully synthetic fluid is the first choice for all Allison transmissions.

  1. For 1000 & 2000 Series the second choice is Dexron III.
  2. For 3000 & 4000 Series the second choice is Dexron III or C4 Fluids.
  3. For Off-Highway series, 5/6/8/9000 the second choice is C4 Fluids.

Q3: How do I check the fluid level?

Answer: Checking fluid level is a two step procedure. Firstly, check the fluid cold, before starting the vehicle, to make sure you have sufficient fluid for start up. Secondly, when on operating temperature, 60 deg C and above, check the fluid level again, with engine running and in Neutral. The level should be between FULL and ADD marks.

For electronically controlled transmissions equipped with the Oil Level Sensor use the Shift Selector to obtain fluid level information.

Q4: What is the “normal” transmission operating temperature?

Answer: Normal operating temperature for Non-Retarder transmissions should be between 60 deg. C and 120 deg. C. For Retarder transmissions maximum temperature can increase to 150 deg. C during Retarder operation.
